Panel of experts discuss perception gap between managers, workers, and executives, and the struggles of managers
There is a “significant disconnect” between employee and employer perceptions of wellbeing, and the managerial gap may be to blame.
“The main disconnect is still between the managers and the executives,” said Alexandra Levit, workforce futurist and author, in a panel discussion on unlocking workforce potential presented by Dayforce.
“The managers are in the trenches with their employees. And if they’re doing a good job, they communicate with them every day. So the managers see the good, the bad and the ugly.”
The problem, however, is that when managers meet with executives, “they usually paint a far rosier picture, and therefore the executives have this perception that everyone is engaged, everyone’s happy, and everything’s running smoothly,” she said.
Psychological safety and leadership
To close this gap, Levit said that we need to train the middle people to “manage up appropriately to their leaders”.
Leaders, in turn, need to communicate to their frontline managers “that they’re in an environment that’s psychologically safe, that they can be honest about issues and problems that are being faced, and that it’s actually preferred to have real talk about what’s really going on,” she said.
